This week was a challenging week for me because we had to choose the social topic that we wanted to focus on. I had a difficult time trying to chose one of these three topics, Mental health,Beauty standards, or the lgbtq + community. In The end I have decided to focus on beauty standards, but I wanted to focus on how it usually starts when we are young. Going to The Museum Of Contemporary Art this week and making our first zine draft made me think about how I really want to address this topic visually. While watching terra there was a recurring quote that made me think about the world and how humans live. The quote was “I then close my eyes”. The narrator of the movie would say this when she talked about how humans decide to ignore all of the bad things that we do to our own world. I found it interesting when she said something along the lines of “And when all of the species in the world tart to go extinct because of me, i'll turn away and close my eyes, it will be man kind to go extinct last, then I will close my eyes for good.”I kind of connected these lines “I close my eyes” to the zines that we will be creating. This project is meant for us to open our own eyes and spread the word of some of the things that are going on I our country to try and spread the word to our community and have them open their own eyes and realize that they themselves can make the problems slowly disappear.

I think this week was challenging for me when we had to read and annotate “silent spring” by Rachel Carson because when I read i’ve noticed that I miss a lot of important things no matter how many times i've read it over and over so when we go into class discussions it’s difficult to participate in the conversation. my class took a trip to The Museum Of Contemporary Art in San Diego. And it felt really nice to get out of the classroom and be given a tour. I don’t go to museums often but I really enjoy seeing what other artists are doing besides painting, which is what I am used to seeing and making. Going to the MCASD showed me that I can do so much more with my art and gave me some ideas on what I can do for the zines that we’ll be making for our Chula Vista Zine Fest. One of the artists that I really enjoyed looking at and learning about is named Paulo Bruscky. He is an artist that lives in Brazil. “Throughout his career, he has produced artworks inspired by everyday experiences that challenge audiences to think about how the world unfolds around them. He has continuously addressed the anonymity and alienation of the individual in the urban landscape, countering that experience with humor, irony, and caustic wit.” -bronx museum I liked how his art looks like mail that has been printed or written on, some have repetition whether its asking the same question over and over or having the same photo with different color and values. For the week of January 8th through 12th I was absent for three days from catching a fever so I had to stay home and rest. When I got back on January 11th we watched some of the film “Terra” (2015). In this film I learned about how life was created. I learned about Lichen, which is called the “pioneer”. No roots are needed and only relies on the carbon that was in the air. Inside Lichen you can find bacteria, they are minuscule, Containing every living genetic code. I also learned that algae would transform carbon using sunlights and gave energy to fungus, to which life exploded. ( Bacteria, Fungi,Algae & Lichen gave birth to the earth's soil) I would like to know how long it took us to get to the homosapien stage of our evolution journey? In the movie Terra the narrator said something along the lines of “prehistoric man asked himself many questions that were left unanswered” which led to mankind painting what they saw around them on a daily on the caves. (The photo in this reflection is an example of the paintings) It had me thinking about how they became the creatures that other species were afraid of when in the beginning, prehistoric men were afraid of almost everything. I wonder if they were able to comprehend emotions like we do today or if they would distract themselves by painting. I use painting as a way to express myself and help me find a reason for the things around me that I can’t find a meaning to, which kind of relates to the pain and pleasures of society article to my own life because I use painting as a way to express myself in ways that I can't explain to others around me.So throughout the movie I was wondering how they saw the world around them when almost everything had no meaning yet. |
