This zine showcases a photo of females that demonstrate body positivity for women who deal with society's beauty standards that are pushed onto them. In these photos, women decided to create their own standards of beauty and decided to ignore mainstream standards. The pressed flowers are meant to represent the meaning of femininity and growth, which is a recurring item/theme throughout the entire zine. The topics discussed in this zine include, body image, sexual abuse, beauty standards, and masculinity in women. These topics were chosen due to personal experiences or interests from students.
In promoting for feminism and the sub topics we’ve chosen to talk about, We each contacted a Social Advocate who lives in San DIego. I chose to contact a pediatrician since my topic is beauty standards starting from a young age, so I can ask her about what it’s like to give advice to children who are insecure or who seem to be on the path to developing an eating disorder.I’ve chose to talk about beauty standards starting from a young age because most people think that adolescents are feeling insecure about themselves from just social media, although that does play a huge part in this problem, most people forget that family and friends might be a problem to growing individual starting from ages as young age 4 years old. |
My social topic for the Chula Vista Zine Fest was about beauty standards starting from a young age. Whether that be from family and friends or social media. I wanted to learn about how badly this can affect the mental and physical health of adolescents who are going through puberty. I think that it is very important that there is teen advocates for this and many other social issues. Because if one teen can get their opinion out to their age group, it will influence how that generation thinks about this problem and how its being taken care of. I plan to take what i’ve learned into my personal life by making sure that all of my younger siblings learn that they shouldn't think that what is being shown on television or social media as the only thing that is considered beautiful in the world. I would also like to teach them to not take what family might say about what they're wearing or how they look to heart and to do things that make them happy and not what makes others happy (same goes for people they call friends)
