For this project we made podcasts about the propositions that people were going to vote for in the state of California. We were put into groups of 4-5 and we had to make a podcast that will inform people of a prop, helping them vote. The props that my group focused on were prop 62 & 66. Prop 62 is about getting rid of the death penalty on the state of California and replacing it with like in prison without parole. Prop 66 wants to keep the death penalty but speed the time that criminals are waiting on death row to 5 years..
process of making our podcast
RESEARCHING ABOUT PROPS 62 & 66 The first thing that we had to do to find out what our props were about was reading articles that our teacher, Dr.P, gave us. It talked about what the propositions want to do if they're passed. each prop had arguments for and against the prop helping you choose if you're for or against the proposition.
PODCAST PITCH Our group had to make a pitch so we can understand what we want to put in the podcast and so that we stick to that idea. We had to have a burning question, the magic formula and then our pitch. Our burning question was, How does it feel to fight for a persons life? Or a person you believe is innocent?. The magic formula was, This is a project about interviewing an appeals lawyer about their experience with working on a death penalty case. And our pitch was, explaining both of the propositions.
INTERVIEWING JUSTIN BROOKS my group wanted to interview Justin Brooks, an appeals lawyer so that we can see what its like to take on a death penalty case form a professionals perspective. Justin brooks is the director if the Innocence Project, this project takes on cases for people that they believe has been wrongfully accused for a crime that they did not commit. We were able to contact him by sending emails. We set a time to Skype each other so we can ask him questions for our podcast. One problem that we ran into, we were late to our own interview. We had trouble login into Skype on a school computer, getting the mic set up and connected to the computer and getting the call going, overall i thought that I learned a lot from the Justin brooks interview.
RECORDING/ EDITING Our group took about two days to record our narration because other groups were also recording at the same time which meant that there were few quiet places to record, the yeti mics that we were using were very sensitive and picked up a lot of background noise. Then my group mate did all the editing on a program called Audacity.
